Graph & Snack

Is there anything our children love more than snack time? Incorporating math into high-interest times of the day is a great way to make it fun for your child.

For this activity, we took turns rolling a dice and then made a picture graph to keep track of the number of times we rolled each number.

  • Setup: I drew the columns for each number and put it in a sheet protector so we could use it again.

  • Play: Take turns rolling the dice and use one piece of snack to record each roll.

Variations by Age:

  1. Ages 1-3: For children who are still learning to count, roll the dice and then count out that many pieces of their snack. Repeat until snack time is over/they’ve had enough goldfish for one day.

  2. Ages 3-6: For children who are ready for an added challenge, roll two dice at once, count the total on the dice, and then graph the total.

Questions to Ask:

To make the time more purposeful, be sure to throw in a few questions to help ensure your child is also thinking about the math.

  1. How many times have we rolled a {insert number]?

  2. Which number have we rolled the most times?

  3. Which numbers haven’t we rolled yet?

  4. Follow-up each question with: How do you know?
